Prince was an icon of the 1980s. Anyone who was in high school and/or college during that time would find him a prominent part of the soundtrack of the times, and for those who were older, like parents, he was probably far too risqué or outright raunchy. He was definitely eccentric--weird even--but never, never boring. He was also incredibly musically prolific, so it's hard to pare down a short list of his music.
